Henrico crews removed more than 120 Flock cameras after the company missed its deadline

Henrico ended its Flock contract and removed the cameras within a month

  5. Oct. 31County crews remove more than 120 cameras.

If you've spotted a Flock camera around Henrico, they're coming down. County crews removed more than 120 of the license plate reader cameras on Saturday, Oct. 31, after Flock missed its deadline to take them down. More than 100 Henrico Public Works employees started at opposite ends of the county and worked toward the middle, according to the county.

  • Storage: the removed cameras will stay in storage until Flock retrieves them
  • Poles: still up, and Flock must remove them and cover the county's costs

Henrico told Flock on Oct. 7 that its contract would end Oct. 14 and gave the company until Oct. 21 to remove the cameras. When that didn't happen, the county sent its own crews. WWBT reported that Flock hadn't met its "contractual obligation" to remove them.

The cameras were already off. County Attorney Andrew Newby told the Henrico Citizen on Oct. 29 that all 128 were still up but deactivated: "They're not connected to anything." A Flock spokesperson told the Times-Dispatch on Friday that the cameras were no longer collecting or retaining images or data.

A 45-foot Christmas tree arrives at CarMax Park as WinterWorld setup begins

If you've been waiting for the holidays to start, just got a head start. A 45-foot-tall Norway Spruce from upstate New York arrived Monday morning and was lifted by crane onto the stadium's northwest concourse, where it's visible from along Arthur Ashe Boulevard. By Monday evening, a Ferris wheel was up too.

  • Opens: Nov. 19
  • Length: 38 days
  • Also planned: Santa's workshop, snowball speed pitch and a Christmas tree maze

WinterWorld is planned to bring a rink, a slide and a Ferris wheel

The festival is planned to have over a million lights. Navigators Baseball, which owns the Richmond Flying Squirrels, is putting more than $3 million into it, and WWBT says the park unveiled the tree ahead of opening.

“We just wanted it to be very visible and sort of a beacon to the event.”
