If you keep an eye on Richmond and Chesterfield, Tuesday night had a big one. Voters in both appeared set to approve a 1% sales tax increase for school construction. Results are unofficial, and the state must certify them by Mon., Dec. 7.

Chesterfield called its version "." A yes would let the Board of Supervisors consider raising the county sales tax from 6% to 7%.

  • Not taxed: groceries, medicine and personal hygiene products
  • Money use: new school construction and major renovations only
  • Early AP calls: Middlesex, Prince Edward yes; Amelia, Essex, New Kent no

Both places sweetened the ask, WTVR reported. Richmond Mayor Danny Avula said he would lower two taxes if it passes, and Chesterfield's then-interim county manager, Matt Harris, said the county would cut two rates.
